Mary Kingsley
Born 13 October 1862 in London. Died on 03 June 1900.
Mary Kingsley was an English ethnographer and anthropologist, scientific writer and explorer whose travels through West Africa helped shape European perceptions of both African cultures and British colonialism in Africa.
Following the death of her parents for whom she had cared, she was free at the age of 30 to travel to West Africa to study African religion and law.
She collected specimens of beetles and freshwater fish for the British Museum. Returning to West Africa in 1897, she travelled to Gabon and Mount Cameroon. Her books include ’Travels in West Africa’.
Mary Kingsley died whilst nursing sick prisoners during the Boer War.
