Freya Stark
Born 31 January 1893 in Paris. Died on 09 May 1993.
Dame Freya Stark was an English travel writer, photographer and explorer. She wrote over 20 travel books.
She was a political influencer who chronicled world events in her travel accounts and received the Founder’s Medal of the Royal Geographical Society.
She worked throughout WW2 in the Middle East in Egypt, Syria, The Yemen and Iraq.
Freya was also a prolific and accomplished photographer, many taken on a Leica III, bought in 1933. A collection of her photographs is held at St Antony’s College, Oxford.
She was appointed a Commander of the British Empire in 1972.
